Potential Health Problems of a Child with Down Syndrome

Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion

INTRODUCTION

You’re a team of three nurses who work in a pediatric clinic. You have a 3 year old boy, Roger S., visiting for a well child exam with Mrs. S, his mother. Roger has Down syndrome and needs surgery that will include a bilateral myringotomy and placement of pressure equalization tubes. Mrs. S. is asking what other health problems Roger may encounter because of his diagnosis of Down syndrome. She says that she wants to prevent as many health problems as she can that he may be at greater risk for because of his diagnosis of Down syndrome.

What will your team do . . . What evidence will you find . . . to inform Mrs. S. of potential health problems Roger may encounter during his childhood.

Mrs. S. is depending on you and your team to provide her with information that will serve to guide her efforts in maximizing Roger’s health over his childhood.
